The Poppy View: THE ONE AND ONLY AUDREY HEPBURN IN 20 YEARS TIME LATER

A style icon, Hollwood superstar and the UNICEF activist - this is probably the shortest describtion which tells you evrything about this lady. Born in Belgium in 1929 as Audrey Ruston didn't live an easy life as it might seem to be. Her English father left her when she was 6 and never came back. On her mother's side she was born with Dutch roots. She was a little girl whose life was broken by the 2nd world war. One of her half-brothers was killed as a Dutch army soldier and the other one was deported to Germany. Audrey survived the war suffering from coldness and hunger. After that she joined ballet school working to survive at the same time. However, her nutritional problems caused by poor diet during the war and the wrong height made her dancing carrier slipped out of her hands. When she realized she wasn't gonna become a prima ballerina she was offered to play some episodic dancing role in film and then she stayed in film industry. The most famous role of her was probably Holly Golightly in "Breakfast at Tiffany's", which also made her a fashion icon. But she also did a great job in theatre plays as Gigi or Eliza in "My fair lady". One can admire her as a princess Ann in "Roman Holiday". Other films are: "Sabrina", "War and Peace", "The nun's story", "Charade", "Funny face" - a story of fashion industry, and many more. Numerous times she was awarded the most important movie and fashion prizes.

But apart from being an amazing acrtess she was also a wife and a mother. She married to an actor Mel Ferrer and later to an Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti. Both marriages ended up with divorces. But as she claimed a real joy of her life she got from her sons. Since 1980 to the end of her life she lived with an actor Robert Wolders and as she said this relationship was the happiest time of her life - even though they never got married, as the man was a real soul mate of her.

Her war expirience made her want to help as she became a Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF. She was travelling all around the world supporting all charity events as well as she was visiting countries where UNICEF gave a hand like Somalia, Ethiopia and so on. She did a phenomenal job at this making thousands of people got involved in world hunger problem. What is unusual about her, she never considered herself beautiful. She claimed to have boyish body, too big feet and other defects. Even so she bacame a style icon. Audrey always wore what she wanted, what was comfortable and what she felt suitable to her. She never cared about fashion - she didn't even realized she was a person making fashion as women all around the world followed her outfits. She wasn't a - typical that time - sexy blond beauty like M. Monroe. She introduced something mysterious to fashion industry. Something that took over the world. As she was a close friend of, another fashion legend, Hubert de Givenchy, she wore clothes created by him in most of the movies she starred. He designed those beautiful Sabrina's outfits and all which you can see in "BAT's", "Paris when it sizzles" or "Charade" and more.

In the end of December 1992 she came back to Switzerland -where she used to live- suffering from appendiceal cancer, when it was known that nobody could recscue her. She wanted to spend the last Christmas with her family. Audrey Hepburn passed away on 20th January 1993.

Ikona stylu, gwiazda filmu i działaczka UNICEF – to chyba najkrótszy opis, który w pełni charakteryzuje tę wspaniałą kobietę. Urodzona w 1929 roku w Belgii jako Audrey Ruston nie wiodła łatwego, jak to może się wydawać, życia. Pochodzący z Anglii ojciec opuścił ją kiedy miała zaledwie 6 lat i nigdy nie powrócił. Ze strony matki odziedziczyła holenderskie korzenie. Była małą dziewczynką, której życie przerwał wybuch II wojny światowej. Jej przyrodni brat zginął na froncie jako żołnierz w służbie Holandii, kolejny został deportowany do Niemiec. Po wojnie jako nastolatka uczęszczała do szkoły baletowej pracując jednocześnie na utrzymanie siebie i matki. Jednak problemy z odżywianiem i nieodpowiedni wzrost przekreśliły karierę baletową. Kiedy zagrała epizodyczną rolę tancerki w filmie zaproponowano jej rolę aktorki – w ten sposób trafiła do przemysłu filmowego. Zapewne największą popularność przyniosła jej rola ekscentrycznej Holly Golightly w „Śniadaniu u Tiffaniego”, która jednocześnie wyniosła ją do rangi ikony stylu. Jednak równie dobre role zagrała w teatrze jako Gigi jak również Eliza w musicalu „My fair Lady”. Możemy ją również podziwiać w innych filmach m.in. „Sabrina”, „Zabawna buzia”, „Wojna i pokój”, „Historia zakonnicy” i „Charade”. Zdobywała kolejno najważniejsze nagrody przemysłu filmowego i modowego.

Jednak poza filmem, rolą jej życia stało się macierzyństwo. Poślubiła aktora Mela Ferrera, a potem włoskiego psychiatrę Andrea Dotti. Oba małżeństwa zakończyły się rozwodami. Jak sama twierdziła prawdziwą radością jej życia byli synowie. Od 1980r. do końca życia dzieliła życie z aktorem Robertem Woldersem i jak sama powiedziała był to najszczęśliwszy czas w jej życiu, mimo że nigdy nie zawarli związku małżeńskiego mężczyzna był jej bratnią duszą.

Doświadczenie wojny wpłynęły na jej decyzję o przystąpieniu do organizacji UNICEF jako Ambasador Dobrej Woli. Podróżowała dookoła świata wspierając działalność charytatywną – nie tylko firmowała UNICEF swoim nazwiskiem, ale również odwiedziła kraje wspierane przez UNICEF, w tym Somalię i Etiopię. Jak się potem okazało wykonała ogrom pracy – sprawiła, że miliony ludzi na całym świecie zaczęły pomagać.

Co niezwykłego w osobie Audrey Hepburn, nigdy nie uważała się za piękną, wskazując na swoje długie stopy, mały biust czy chłopięcą sylwetkę. Mimo tego stała się ikoną stylu. Zawsze nosiła to, na co miała ochotę lub co było wygodne. Nigdy nie dbała o modę – nieświadomie to ona stała się osobą, która modę dyktowała. Sprawiła, że kobiety na całym świecie pragnęły nosić jej stroje, naśladowały zestawienia ubrań. Nie była, typową w tym czasie, blond pięknością o pełnym biuście i krągłych kształtach jak M. Monroe. Mimo to zawładnęła światem mody. Jako, że była bliską przyjaciółką innej modowej legendy– Huberta de Givenchy – w większości filmów wystąpiła w ubraniach, które dla niej uszył. To właśnie Givenchy zaprojektował zjawiskowe suknie dla „Sabriny”, „Śniadania u Tiffaniego”, „Paryż kiedy wrze”, „Szarady” i wielu innych.

W grudniu 1992 Audrey wróciła do Szwajcarii, gdzie wcześniej mieszkała, cierpiąc na raka wyrostka robaczkowego, kiedy już było wiadomo, że nikt nie ma dla niej lekarstwa. Pragnęła spędzić ostatnie święta z rodziną, towarzyszył im także de Givenchy. Audrey Hepburn odeszła 20 stycznia 1993 roku.
